Dive into the avant-garde world of the early 20th century with a work that revolutionised the boundaries of art music! Composed in 1912, Arnold Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire (Moonstruck Pierrot) has become a cultural classic. This melodrama takes the listener into a dreamlike state where love, madness and death intertwine with frightening beauty.

The charismatic Maria Ylipää shines on stage, her phenomenal interpretation and unique voice combined with Carl Knif’s captivating direction. Schönberg’s use of Sprechstimme, a spoken word, a form of expression on the borderline between song and speech, brings a charming strangeness and depth to Pierrot’s story. The nuanced playing of the chamber ensemble enlivens the work, based on Albert Giraud’s poems, to new splendour.

In the second half of the concert, the audience is transported to the cabaret and jazz vibes of Berlin! The programme features music from the cultural boom of the early 20th century, works familiar from the Babylon Berlin series and works by composers such as Mischa Spoliansky and Marzi Nyman.

This evening is a journey into an era where anything was possible – and nothing was sacred.
