Tuomas Turriago's Sonata record sparkles!

TUOMAS TURRIAGO

Composer, pianist, arranger and conductor Tuomas Turriago has a career of over thirty years as a popular and unprejudiced chamber musician. As a chamber pianist, he has performed at the Rauma Festivo, Katrina Chamber Music, Turku Music Festival, Riihimäki Summer Concert Series, Jyväskylä Summer Festival, Crusell Festival, Hetta Chamber Music Days, Kaakko Chamber Music and Lieksan Vaskiviikko. Among the musicians are Kreeta-Julia Heikkilä, Petteri Iivonen, Sini Simonen, Castalian String Quartet, Uusi Helsinki Quartet, Tempera Quartet, Arttu Kataja, Tuuli Takala, Tuomas Katajala, Marko Ylönen, Samuli Peltonen, Sami Junnonen, Jouko Harjanne and Pacho Flores.

Turriago is also a sought-after composer. The most recent premiere was a trumpet concerto commissioned by the Tampere Philharmonic on 5 April 2024, with the Venezuelan trumpeter Pacho Flores as soloist, an exclusive recording for Deutsche Grammophon. Turriago’s 50 compositions include two chamber operas to libretti by Susanna Haavisto and Maritza Nuñez, nine sonatas for orchestra and a large body of chamber music. His works have been published by Fennica Gehrman.

Turriago has been a lecturer at the Tampere University of Applied Sciences since 2004 and a lecturer at the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts since 2019. He is also an active conductor. He has conducted the Vaasa, Seinäjoki and Mikkeli City Orchestras and the Tampere Philharmonic Brass Orchestra, and has also appeared as a conductor at the October Festival of New Music, Tampere Biennale, Tampere Theatre Summer and Riihimäki Summer Concert Series. He has also regularly conducted the contemporary music ensemble TampereRaw and the orchestras and opera productions of Tampere University of Applied Sciences, under the direction of Juulia Tapola, Minna Kangas, Helena Rängman and, in the coming season, Siljamari Heikinheimo.

Turriago is the artistic director of the Riihimäki Summer Concert Series.

Turriago’s work has been supported by numerous grants from the Finnish Cultural Foundation, the Pro Musica Foundation and the Alfred Kordelin Foundation.
