EMMA SALOKOSKI

Emma Salokoski has been a singer since 1998. She started in the world of musical theatre with the musicals Rent and Les Miserables, but soon moved on to solo work. Emma often composes and writes her own songs, and her music has also been performed in several theatre and dance productions. In 2006, Emma was named Female Soloist of the Year at the Emma Awards. Emma Salokoski Ensemble’s album “Kaksi mannerta” has sold gold and the video for the song “Veden alla”, released in 2010, has been viewed over 4 million times on YouTube.

During her career, Emma has released three albums with her band “Emma Salokoski Ensemble” and two albums with her band “Quintessence”. In 2009, she released the critically acclaimed album “Vi sålde våra hemman”, a collaboration with the Ilmiliekki Quartet, which arranged Swedish folk songs with a modern Nordic jazz twist. In autumn 2018, the collaboration continued with the release of an album of compositions to Swedish-language poems. The album “Ligger du fortfarande i sängen!” was nominated for a Jazz Emma Award.

In 2010 he released the album “Omani uni” in collaboration with Maria Ylipää. The material consisted of Finnish poems interpreted by young Finnish composers for string quartet and jazz trio. Emma has also recorded a bilingual children’s album “Rytmihyrrä/Rytmyra” (comp. by Kirmo Lintinen, text by Mayvor Lintinen) with the UMO, and performed a stage version of the work dramatised by Christian Lindblad. In 2015 Emma released the pop music-inclined album “Kiellettyjä asioita” with Warner Music Finland. Emma has also directed the stage play “Body Positive!” for Music Theatre Kapsäkki in spring 2019.

Emma is also a choir director, and runs her own choir called “Emma Salokoski Voices”. More than a choir, the group is a creative collective specialising in interdisciplinary projects. ESV has produced two musical theatre plays; Plastic Bride (Kapsäkki 2014, directed by Sara Melleri) and Body Positive! (Kapsäkki 2019, directed by Emma Salokoski and Marcus Groth).

Emma also sings in the improvisation group Aito Collective.

Emma has a degree in vocal pedagogy from the Complete Vocal Institute in Copenhagen, and also works as a choir coach and voice coach. Emma has also studied rhythmic choral conducting in Denmark in the “Vocal Leadership Diploma” at the Royal Academy of Music Aalborg.
