Turku Ensemble was born in 1984, when a group of musicians from Turku got together and decided to start playing together regularly. The idea at the time was to increase and enrich the supply of high quality chamber music in Turku.
One of the key features of the association’s activities has always been the combination of different instruments and groups of instruments. Cooperation with various orchestras and ensembles and cross-artistic projects have also been part of the Turku Ensemble’s activities.
Turku Ensemble’s ensemble of more than twenty musicians consists of teachers from the Turku Arts Academy and the Conservatory of Music, as well as musicians from the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra. The ensemble has performed not only in Finland, but also in Sweden, Russia, the Czech Republic and the United States.
For several years, the Turku Ensemble was the House Band ensemble of the Wäinö Aaltonen Museum’s Tuesday concert series, which ended in spring 2024, and performed at least a couple of times in both the autumn and spring seasons. The Turku Ensemble is now honoured to start the Aurora concert series organised by the Turku Music Festival, continuing the tradition of the WAM series!
Harri Sippel, violist, is the president of the association.
Turku Ensemble ry was founded in November 1984 and its debut concert was held in Turku Castle on 3 March 1985. Turku Ensemble welcomes all chamber music lovers to the Sibelius Museum for its 40th anniversary concert on 12 March 2025, where the programme of the debut concert of 40 years ago will be performed! Many of the Turku Ensemble’s founding members are still in the line-up.
