Verneri Pohjola

VERNERI POHJOLA

Trumpeter and composer Verneri Pohjola has developed a distinctive musical voice over the past two decades—one that is immediately recognisable. His playing is characterised by warmth, calmness, and powerful, expressive improvisation. Helsingin Sanomat has described him as “Finland’s most human-sounding and emotionally intelligent trumpeter.”

Born into an artistic family, Pohjola began playing the trumpet at the age of 15. His passion for music was sparked by rock and jazz, but film music also played a key role in leading him to the instrument. He studied at the Pop & Jazz Conservatory, the Örebro Academy of Music, and the Sibelius Academy, where he graduated with a Master of Music degree in 2012.

In the early 2000s, he gained wider recognition through the ensembles Ilmiliekki Quartet, Quintessence, and Q-Continuum. His Emma Award-winning debut album Aurora (Texicalli Records 2009 / ACT 2011) made a major impact on the European and American jazz scenes, receiving critical acclaim on both continents.

With his second album Ancient History (ACT 2012), Pohjola firmly established himself as one of Europe’s most respected jazz musicians. Since then, he has released five albums on the UK-based Edition Records, the most recent being Monkey Mind (2023).

His accolades include a nomination for the Teosto Prize (2024), a nomination for the prestigious Nordic Council Music Prize (2021) for his significant contribution to Nordic music, Finland’s highest recognition for a jazz musician, the Yrjö Award (2017), and an Emma Award for Bullhorn as Jazz Album of the Year (2015).

In August 2023, Pohjola premiered the trumpet concerto HUSH, composed for him by Kaija Saariaho, performing as soloist in two sold-out concerts at the Helsinki Festival with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Susanna Mälkki. Other commissioning partners included the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Asko|Schönberg, Muziekgebouw, BBC Radio 3, and Sinfonia Lahti.

His most recent work, Against Darkness, created in collaboration with composer and arranger Timo Hietala, was premiered in February 2026 at the Helsinki Music Centre with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by John Storgårds.

In the coming years, Pohjola will once again focus more on composing his own music, orchestral projects, and his quartet, while continuing to perform and record regularly with other European artists.
