You step into the King’s Hall of Turku Castle. The stone walls carry centuries of history, and the space falls silent. Trumpeter Verneri Pohjola invites the audience into a shared moment of meditation, where music, breath, and presence form a collective experience.
Castle Meditation continues the Turku Music Festival’s Castle Yoga concept, but this time the focus is on stillness rather than movement. Pohjola creates a solo concert in which calm improvisation, breathing exercises, and audience participation come together to form an experience where everyone can find their own way of being present.
“I often compare trumpet playing and peaceful improvisation to meditation. Both are connected through breathing; in both, it is essential to be present in the moment; and both can enhance quality of life and clarity of mind. In both meditation and improvisation, the idea is to let thoughts exist without attaching to them. My view of improvisation, at its most honest, is very similar. In this concert, I want to share this experience of presence that I work with every day. I welcome people to listen and to be present together,” says Pohjola.
The concert is a shared experience where sound creates space to breathe and unwind. Castle Meditation invites you to be present.
