Sami Klemola is a versatile composer and sound artist whose compositional output includes orchestral works, concerts, solo works, chamber music with and without electronics, choral works, and music for dance, theatre and new circus.
In recent years, Klemola’s works have been widely performed throughout Europe, as well as in the USA, Australia and Latin America. Performers have included Tapiola Sinfonietta, Avanti!, The Lapland Chamber Orchestra, Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra, defunensemble, Uusinta Ensemble, Helsinki Chamber Choir, Arctic Sinfonietta (NO), Sonar Quartet (DE), Alter Face Piano Duo (ES), Sepia Ensemble (PL), Argonaut String Quartet (AU) and Ensemble Laboratorium (CH).
In addition to concert music, Klemola makes sound installations, visual art and is an active improviser in various ensembles. Klemola has been the artistic director of the Helsinki-based electroacoustic contemporary music ensemble defunensemble since its foundation. The ensemble has become one of the most sought-after performers in Finnish contemporary music, both in Finland and internationally. Klemola was also Artistic Director of the Tampere Biennale Festival in 2016 and 2018, which was selected as Festival of the Year by Finland Festivals in 2018. Klemola has also been one of the artistic directors of the Nordic Music Days (Helsinki) (together with Nils Schweckendieck and Petri Kumela) in 2013. Klemola’s chamber music work “…On Escher” was nominated for the TEOSTO prize in spring 2020. Klemola also works as a part-time lecturer at the Music Technology Department of the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts.
