Otto Nuoranne (b. 1991) is a Helsinki-based composer, musician and cellist.
Nuoranne’s influences range from contemporary music to progressive metal via Renaissance counterpoint and IDM, and he always strives to combine the subtlety and complexity of acoustic and classical music with the rhythmic drive and intensity of amplified and electronic music.
He is currently working on a new orchestral work, Armas, a solo work for baritone saxophone and electronics with the support of the Sibelius Fund, and a new work for bass clarinet, cello and electronics with the support of the Madetoja Foundation. He has composed music for, among others, the Musica nova festival, the Science Lab project of the Baltic Sea Festival, the Avanti! chamber orchestra, the Zagros Ensemble, the HISS Quartet, the Hai Quartet and the EMO Ensemble, as well as vocal music and solo repertoire for various instruments.
His piano work Polaris received an honourable mention from the jury at the Tampere Piano Competition composition competition in 2025. His work Roso was selected to represent Finland at the Ung Nordisk Musik festival in Örebro, Sweden, in 2024. Since 2021, Nuoranne’s work has been generously supported by various grants and subsidies from Taike, MES, SKR, Svenska kulturfonden, the Sibelius Academy Support Foundation and Finnish Composers.
Nuoranne is studying for a Master’s degree in composition at the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts. He spent the spring semester of 2025 as a visiting master’s student at McGill University’s Schulich School of Music in Montreal, Canada, under the guidance of Professor Chris Paul Harman, with additional studies under Eliot Britton and Luna Pearl Woolf. Previously, he has been taught by Ville Raasakka, Juhani Nuorvala and Matthew Whittall, and he has also participated in masterclasses taught by Jukka Tiensuu, Tomi Räisänen, Julian Anderson and Carola Bauckholt. He is interested in multidisciplinary projects such as composing music for films, theatre and dance.
