Internationally and nationally renowned conductor John Storgårds has several permanent conducting engagements in Finland and abroad. The most recent of these is an appointment as Principal Conductor of the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra from autumn 2024. Storgårds has also been appointed Principal Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra in 2023. Storgårds has been Artistic Director of the Lapland Chamber Orchestra since 1996 and Principal Guest Conductor of the Ottawa National Arts Centre Orchestra since 2015. As a guest conductor, Storgårds regularly conducts many of the world’s top orchestras.
Storgårds’ discography is extensive, including not only key orchestral literature with many different orchestras, but also a large number of less frequently performed works. John Storgårds has premiered hundreds of works in his career as both violinist and conductor. Storgårds has received numerous important awards throughout his career, including the State Prize for Music in 2002 and the Pro Finlandia Medal in 2012.
John Storgårds began his musical career as a violinist, and was concertmaster of several orchestras before graduating as conductor from the Sibelius Academy’s conducting class. His career as a violinist continues to run parallel to his conducting work, both as a soloist and as a chamber musician with many world-class artists and ensembles.
