Aaro Haavisto(Senzui) is a shakuhachi artist, chairman of the Finland Shakuhachi Society, Ueda-ryu shakuhachi teacher, Japanese interpreter and flute maker based in Finland. Raised in a musical household he started music with 10 years of classical guitar studies and majored in soloistic lute at the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki. He studied Japanese language and culture at the University of Helsinki and worked as Japanese interpreter and teacher as well as lute and guitar teacher.
After moving to Japan he worked as coordinator for international affairs and studied traverso flute making under Keigo Takesa. A chance encounter with a shakuhachi teacher introduced him to shakuhachi and he subsequently studied under Yasunori Tani – the Ueda-ryu lemoto representative Dai-shihan. Since returning to Finland he teaches the Ueda-ryu shakuhachi in Finland and online, and builds and fixes various musical instruments. He is one of the founders of the Finland Shakuhachi Society which has since 2020 grown to around 30 members.
