The Turku Cathedral Oratorio Choir is a mixed choir that, true to its name, prepares and performs large-scale sacred choral works for the cathedral and its congregation, presents concerts, and takes an active role in both the everyday life and celebrations of the church. The choir’s core repertoire includes works such as Mozart’s Requiem. New members may apply for a permanent position in the choir through an audition. The choir also travels and performs in various ensembles outside its home cathedral.
In recent years, the choir has performed at venues including the Helsinki Music Centre, Rome, and Westminster Abbey in London.
The Oratorio Choir rehearses on Thursday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00 PM in Turku. It is an ideal choir for singers who wish to perform large-scale works with organ and orchestral accompaniment while enjoying a strong sense of community. The choir works with a high level of ambition, but always in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
The choir’s regular organist and accompanist is Markku Hietaharju, organist of Turku Cathedral and a distinguished organ artist. The choir is conducted by choir director and cantor Anu Åberg.
