TUOMAS MIETTOLA

Tenor Tuomas Miettola, originally from Iisalmi, was the first recipient of the Jorma Hynninen Art Prize. He made his debut at the Finnish National Opera in spring 2022 as the Novice in Benjamin Britten’s Billy Budd. Since then, he has become a highly sought-after performer on both opera and concert stages.

Over the past two years, he has appeared at Oulu City Theatre as Prince Tamino (The Magic Flute), at Tampere Opera as Gastone (La Traviata), Jaquino (Fidelio), and the First Man (The Last Temptations), as well as at the Finnish National Opera as the Third Jew (Salome). Among his other significant roles are Fritz (Mascagni: L’Amico Fritz), Albert Herring (Britten: Albert Herring), Ferrando (Mozart: Così fan tutte), and the Male Chorus (Britten: The Rape of Lucretia) in the productions of the Sibelius Academy Opera Training Programme. He has also premiered numerous opera roles and performed at major festivals such as Ilmajoki Music Festival, Kuhmo Chamber Music, Rauma Festivo, Meidän Festivaali, and Korsholm Music Festival.

In addition to the Jorma Hynninen Art Prize, Miettola won second prize and the Andres Wiklöf Audience Prize at the international Havets Röst competition in September 2023. He was also chosen as a grant recipient of both the Finnish Wagner Society and the Friends of the Salzburg Festival in 2022.

In summer 2025, Miettola made his debut at the Savonlinna Opera Festival as Misail and the Boyar in Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov and returned to the role of the First Man in Kokkonen’s The Last Temptations. For the 2025–2026 season, he has been engaged in the Finnish National Opera’s Young Artist Programme, with roles including the tenor soloist in CircOpera 2.0, the Young Servant in Elektra, Gastone in La Traviata, and Alméric in Iolanta. He will also appear as Arturo & Normanno in Jyväskylä Opera’s Lucia di Lammermoor. In summer 2026, he will return to the Savonlinna Opera Festival as Goro in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly.

On the concert stage, Miettola has performed as a soloist with the George Enescu Festival Symphony Orchestra, Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra, Oulu Symphony, Vaasa City Orchestra, Lohja City Orchestra, the Finnish Baroque Orchestra, and Lapland Chamber Orchestra.
