TEEMU MASTOVAARA

Teemu Mastovaara is a cellist and composer whose musicianship brings together different worlds. As a cellist, he is particularly active in the fields of contemporary music and theatre. In 2025, he presented his profile concert “Elämän ja kuoleman syksy” (“The Autumn of Life and Death”), about which Turun Sanomat wrote: “[Mastovaara’s piece] Après la pluie […] created a dreamlike, beautiful atmosphere, crowned by Mastovaara’s elegant cello solos.”

As a theatre musician, Mastovaara has performed in productions at Åbo Svenska Teater. In Turku City Theatre’s musical Once, in addition to playing, he also made his debut as an actor.

Mastovaara often expands his cello playing electronically, for example with Max/MSP, with which he has also built interactive installations. He has premiered works by, among others, Matti Heininen and Riikka Talvitie. He is a member of Ensemble for New Music Tallinn, an ensemble specialising in contemporary music. Mastovaara has performed as a soloist with, among others, the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra and Collegium Musicum Turku. On Swallow the Sun’s metal album “When a Shadow is Forced into the Light”, Mastovaara plays the cello. The album was nominated for an Emma Award in 2020.

Mastovaara’s artistic work has been supported by, among others, MES, Taike, the Society of Finnish Composers, and the Teosto Cultural Foundation. He graduated from the master’s programme in Contemporary Performance and Composition, during which he studied contemporary music in various forms in Tallinn, Stockholm, Lyon, and Hamburg.
