PATRIK KLEEMOLA

Patrik Kleemola is among the leading classical guitarists in Northern Europe, performing actively as a soloist, chamber musician, and soloist with symphony orchestras. After winning the II Guitaristival International Guitar Competition dedicated to Toru Takemitsu and receiving prizes at competitions such as the Gargnano International Guitar Competition, he has performed as a soloist at major music festivals both in Finland and internationally, including London, Rome, Buenos Aires, Hiroshima, Athens, Dublin, Tallinn, Milan, Augsburg, and other cities across Europe, South America, and Asia.

Kleemola’s repertoire includes classical guitar concertos by Rodrigo, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Takemitsu, Ponce, Giuliani, and Vivaldi, as well as concertos commissioned by him from Heiniö, Gerung, and Maggio. He has appeared as a soloist with ensembles such as the Orquesta Sinfónica de la Juventud Venezolana El Sistema, Orchestra I Pomeriggi Musicali, the Sanremo Symphony Orchestra, the Lecce Symphony Orchestra, the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, Uusinta Ensemble, Key Ensemble, and Tampere Cappella. He is also active as a chamber musician in various ensembles.

Kleemola is known for his intensive collaboration with numerous composers, and his commissions have expanded the guitar repertoire by more than sixty works, ranging from solo pieces and chamber music to guitar concertos and pedagogical literature.

Composers such as Ada Gentile, Hans-Jürgen Gerung, Mikko Heiniö, Eero Hämeenniemi, Asta Hyvärinen, Pertti Jalava, Markku Klami, Juha T. Koskinen, Paola Livorsi, Seppo Pohjola, Harri Suilamo, Tapio Tuomela, and Harri Vuori have written works for Kleemola. His recordings have received enthusiastic international acclaim.

In recent years, Kleemola has also focused on early Romantic guitar music of the 19th century, which he performs on an original guitar built by René Lacote in 1839. He has particularly studied the life and works of Fernando Sor based on original sources, leading to collaborations with leading Sor scholars and membership in the international Cambridge Cohort for Guitar Research.

Kleemola serves as a lecturer in guitar at the Turku Conservatory and regularly gives masterclasses in connection with his tours, including in Buenos Aires (UNA – Universidad Nacional del Arte), London (Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance), Augsburg (Leopold Mozart College of Music, University of Augsburg), and elsewhere in Japan, Italy, the UK, Estonia, and Finland. He has served as a jury member in several international guitar competitions and has directed the Turku Guitar Festival, which he founded, since 2014.

Kleemola studied at the Turku Music Academy with Timo Korhonen and Ismo Eskelinen, and in Italy at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena with Oscar Ghiglia, as well as at the Conservatory of Monopoli with Massimo Felici. Patrik Kleemola performs on guitars built by José Luis Romanillos (1979) and René Lacote (1839).
