JOEL PAPINOJA

Joel Papinoja, originally from Valkeala, is an active pianist particularly engaged in vocal and contemporary music. He has also performed in Australia and the United States, as well as widely at Finnish festivals including Vocal Espoo, Rauma Festivo, and Urkuyö ja Aaria. At the Heinävesi Music Days he was for many years a regular guest, and since 2024 he has been part of the festival’s artistic leadership. He has also served as an official pianist at the international Mirjam Helin Singing Competition and the Lappeenranta Singing Competition.

Recent highlights include the premiere of the song cycle Davis Dies at the Barcelona Festival of Song, as well as the work Hyväksyminen by Aki Yli-Salomäki and Auli Särkiö, recorded with the Somnium Ensemble, which received the Indie Awards Classical Album of the Year and was nominated for an Emma Award. Papinoja has also premiered and recorded several works with ensembles such as Uuden Ajan Ensemble, and has appeared with several of Finland’s professional orchestras. Most recently he performed with Sinfonia Lahti in John Adams’s Frenzy under the composer’s own direction.

Alongside his concert career, he works as an arts lecturer at the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki and serves as the regular répétiteur for the Helsinki Music Centre Choir.
