Duration 1 h, no intermission
World-renowned flutist Claire Chase brings one of the most ambitious musical projects of our time to Turku: the Density 2036 project. This recital opens the door to the future of flute music and a world where the traditional solo instrument meets the boundless possibilities of electronics, space, and sound.
Density 2036 is a 24-year project that began in 2013 and will continue until 2036, one hundred years after Edgard Varèse’s groundbreaking work Density 21.5. The project’s goal is to create an entirely new repertoire for the flute by commissioning and premiering works by contemporary composers from around the world. The result is a constantly growing, diverse body of work that radically expands our understanding of what the flute can be and what it can express. This recital features a selection of works for solo flute and electronics – an intimate yet boundless sonic universe.
Chase’s performances are all-encompassing experiences in which acoustic and electronic sound merge into a single sonic space. The flute is not merely an instrument, but a source of sound that can be breathy, raw, whispering, or explosive. Electronics introduce invisible layers, as if there were multiple performers on stage at the same time. The atmosphere is intense, exploratory, and hypnotic: the listener is invited into the heart of the sound.
This recital is a rare opportunity to encounter music that is born in the present moment and oriented toward the future. Claire Chase’s Density 2036 not only presents new works but builds an entirely new world for the flute. The result is a concert that challenges, surprises, and opens the listener’s ears to a new way of hearing.
