Archipelago Stories is composer Mari Sainio’s personal musical journey through the archipelago’s landscapes – a place where the sea, the wind, and memories converge – arranged for a piano quintet and singer-sound artist Sini Koskela. The result is an exceptional concert experience in which chamber music, electronic soundscapes, video imagery, and inspiration from nature come together to transform into our beloved archipelago.
The collection of works has emerged over the years from paths traversed in the archipelago and time spent by the sea. Sainio combines acoustic instruments, synthesizers, and field recordings to create a multi-layered, living soundscape. In the concert, the works are performed consecutively without breaks, forming a cohesive, approximately one-hour-long musical narrative. The musicians of the piano quintet, Kreeta-Julia Heikkilä (violin), Siljamari Heikinheimo (violin), Hanna Hohti (viola), Jaani Helander (cello), and Mariko Furukawa (piano), are among the leading figures in Finnish chamber music and are particularly at home in the subtle nuances of minimalist and neoclassical music.
Archipelago Stories takes the listener through the seasons and moods of the archipelago. Nostalgic memories of childhood summers, the peace of nature, and the clarity of the sea air alternate with the work’s darker tones, which address the vulnerability of the Baltic Sea and environmental change. The soundscapes and nature sounds created by Koskelainen tie the pieces together, and the archipelago-themed film adaptation directed by award-winning filmmaker Lauri Danska complements the performance as a visual experience. Together, they form a slowly unfolding, meditative landscape where the listener can almost feel the presence of the sea.
This concert is an audiovisual journey into the nature, memories, and unique culture of the archipelago. The delicate sound of the piano quintet, elements of sound art, and the visual presentation create a whole that invites you to pause in nature and listen to the sea in a new way. Archipelago Stories celebrates the beauty of the archipelago, but at the same time reminds us of its fragility.
