Anton Mejias (b. 2001) is a Finnish-Cuban pianist whose career has rapidly risen to the international forefront. He is particularly known for his interpretations of Bach: as a child, he studied the entire first book of The Well-Tempered Clavier, and has since performed all six Partitas, the French and English Suites, and Book II. Bach lies at the core of his artistic identity, and his repertoire continues to expand.
In the 2023/24 season, Mejias made his U.S. debut as a soloist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl under the baton of Tarmo Peltokoski—an important milestone for the young pianist. He has appeared as a soloist with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra, Hallé Orchestra, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, and the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra. Solo debuts at the Klavier-Festival Ruhr, Dresden Music Festival, and in Munich (performing The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book II) further established him as one of the leading pianists of his generation. Süddeutsche Zeitung described his playing as “astonishingly virtuosic and effortless.”
In 2024, Mejias made his French solo debut in Toulouse (Piano aux Jacobins) and premiered Philip Lasser’s Suite Française in SWR Kultur’s Internationale Pianisten series in Mainz. He has collaborated extensively with baritone Matthias Goerne, and their interpretation of Schubert’s Winterreise has been presented at venues including Wigmore Hall and the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse. Schwanengesang was performed at Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam. Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book II has also featured prominently in his festival appearances, including at Heidelberger Frühling.
In March 2025, Mejias released his debut album on Deutsche Grammophon, The Art of Memory. The album combines Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book II with Philip Lasser’s 12 preludes and was recorded live at a concert in the Palais im Großen Garten in Dresden. Lasser’s work, commissioned by the Dresden Music Festival and Newport Classical, received widespread acclaim at its premiere.
In the 2025–2026 season, Mejias will perform Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra and make solo debuts at Tonhalle Zürich’s Série jeunes and in Solingen, where he will perform all of Bach’s French Suites.
Mejias has won top prizes at the Viotti Competition and the Nordic Piano Competition, and was awarded the Deutschlandfunk Förderpreis at Musikfest Bremen in 2024. He studied at the Sibelius Academy and graduated in 2024 from the Curtis Institute of Music under the guidance of Gary Graffman and Ignat Solzhenitsyn.
