After nearly a decade of musical friendship, it feels only natural that Pekka Kuusisto and the acclaimed American singer-songwriter Gabriel Kahane have formalised their collaboration under the name Council. The result is an evening of intimate and sonically rich songs alongside chamber music works, created during a series of writing retreats in Kesälahti in North Karelia and Portland, Oregon.
With their new material, Kuusisto and Kahane seek to locate the universal within the personal—and vice versa. The concert features stories of individual and collective grief, nostalgia, youth and the play of memory, violence and revenge—but also of the joy, wonder and astonishment of fatherhood in an era of global instability.
As two artists in relentless pursuit of new expression explore and deepen their friendship on stage, they also offer a musical tapestry that reflects the complexity of life in the 21st century.
