On May Day 2027, a new chapter in Finnish music history will be written as the Turku Music Festival brings one of the most widely followed events in the international classical music world to Finland and Turku for the very first time. Berliner Philharmoniker will perform its annual Europakonzert at the new Fuuga Concert Hall under the baton of its Chief Conductor, Kirill Petrenko.
Founded in 1991, the Europakonzert is one of the world’s most prominent televised classical music events. Each year, it is presented at a culturally and historically significant venue somewhere in Europe. Previous Europakonzerte have taken place at locations including the Sagrada Família in Barcelona, Esterházy Palace in Austria, and Tsinandali in Georgia. On May Day 2027, one of the most prestigious stages in European musical life will be built in Turku.
The Turku Europakonzert will be conducted by Kirill Petrenko, with Norwegian star pianist Leif Ove Andsnes appearing as soloist. The programme features Jean Sibelius’ Night Ride and Sunrise, Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor, and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6, the Pastoral Symphony. Sibelius’ tone poem brings a distinctly Finnish perspective to the concert, while the works of Grieg and Beethoven place the Turku Europakonzert within the grand continuum of Europe’s musical heritage.
The concert will be broadcast internationally via television and streaming platforms to audiences in more than 80 countries, as well as through the Digital Concert Hall of Berliner Philharmoniker. Through the broadcast, produced by Yle and EuroArts, the new Fuuga Concert Hall and the city of Turku will receive an exceptional level of international cultural visibility.
The Europakonzert is far more than a single concert: it is an international cultural event of a scale and significance unprecedented in Finland, placing Turku at the centre of European musical life for a moment in time.
Ticket sales for concerts at Fuuga are handled through Kulttuuriranta’s ticket sales.
