VILLE URPONEN

VILLE URPONEN is one of Finland’s most prominent concert organists. Having studied organ and piano with Kari Jussila and Meri Louhos, respectively, at the Sibelius Academy, he went on to study organ with Jacques van Oortmerssen in Amsterdam. He completed a Doctor of Music degree in 2009.

Ville Urponen has given performances in numerous countries in Europe, in South Korea, in China and in Russia, besides appearing at major music festivals in Finland and abroad. In summer 2020, he gave the opening concerts in the 20th anniversary concert series of the ‘Bach organ’ at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig.

Urponen has released several internationally acclaimed solo albums, the most recent of these being the first instalment in a project to record the complete organ works of Johann Sebastian Bach. His discography also includes numerous albums where he is the accompanist or performs with an orchestra.

Ville Urponen is currently Lecturer in Organ Music at the Sibelius Academy and Artistic Director of the Turku Organ Festival. He is a member of the planning committee for the organ to be built in the main auditorium of the Music Centre in Helsinki. In 2015, he was awarded the trophy of the Organum Society, the oldest organ music society in the Nordic countries, for his long-term high-profile service to organ music.
