Petri Aarnio began his studies at the East Helsinki Music Academy with Géza Szilvay, before transferring to the Sibelius Academy as a student of Lajos Garami. He continued his studies with Dorothy DeLay and Joel Smirnoff at The Juilliard School in New York.

Petri Aarnio is the first concertmaster of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. He has been a member of the New Helsinki Quartet since 1990. Aarnio also plays as violinist in the piano trio Ad Libitum, together with cellist Erkki Lahesmaa and pianist Naoko Shibayama-Aarnio. He has performed as a chamber musician and soloist not only in his home country but also in Europe, the United States, South America, Africa, China, and Japan. He has been teaching at the Sibelius Academy since 1997.
